The Myth of the Gatekeeper+UFC 244 Picks
Bryan Barberena, Matt Brown, Ben Rothwell, Darren Elkins, Neil Magny. Just a few of my all time picks for BMF. This title, created out of Nate Diaz post fight antics, in the brain of Dana White, and unveiled in the presence of the biggest star in Hollywood, The Rock, is embodied by those fighters. It is time guys like Masvidal and Diaz got their due, just badass figthers who don't say no to kicking someones ass no matter the circumstances. Jorge Masvidal claimed before his fight with Donald Cerrone that the UFC calls him in when they want guys to lose. After the win, despite being 2-2 in his last 4, Masvidal found himself in a title eliminator. At FW Darren Elkins and Jeremy Stephens have found themselves in the title picture after just a win or two. The same is true across the board from Flyweight to Heavyweight, right now the most likely challenger for Jon Jones is European veteran Jan Blachowicz who was KO'd within the year!
The term "Gatekeeper" is a myth. The truth is if you're good enough to make the top 10 ranking in the worlds premiere fight organization then chances are you are good enough to become a champion. Your job at that point is to beat back the young lions gunning for your spot. Right now Derek Brunson is currently in the #8 spot at middleweight, 6 months ago everyone was pouring dirt on his grave after back to back losses to Izzy and Jacare. Now he is right back in the mix after turning back up and coming prospect Ian Heinisch and veteran pro fighter Elias Theodorou. That is your job as a UFC fighter, get a top spot and defend it. Everyone losses in this sport, its about how you respond. For every Conor McGregor or Adeanya who gets to a belt without taking a loss there is a guy like Bisping who's career was pock marked with split decision razor thin losses to the best fighters on the planet.
In the UFC your record is irrelevant, I could (probably) go 50-0 if I only fought quadriplegic 10 year olds. What matters in Mixed Martial Arts is who you fought, this isn't boxing where "super stars" are protected until they're 30-0 this is the dog eat dog world of MMA and around here, iron sharpens iron. Prospects need those litmus test challenges coming up, you have to beat a Cowboy Cerrone, or a Frankie Edgar or in earlier years, Shogun Rua to stamp your spot on the map. That doesn't make those guys gate keepers, it makes them some of the BMF's on the planet. Guys like the 5 I mentioned at the top never shy away forma fight no matter how big or small, they don't care about venue or gate size or how many Instagram followers a win would bring them, they think exclusively about going out, dishing out pain and raising their hand in victory.
Tonight's card is the biggest celebration of the "gatekeeper" in the history of MMA. Two guys with double digit losses are taking center stage over LEGIT title contenders, with a belt they made up just to prove how bad ass they are. The president of the united states will be in the front row. The man who drove a billion dollars in ticket sales over the last year will be placing it around the winners waist. Between these two men they have fought 78 times professionally, only one time for a UFC title. This isn't about having a shiny piece of metal around your waist, it's about saying, I am a professional cage fighter who is prepared to scrap and entertain millions with my fists, my toughness and my grit. Win or lose both men will leave that cage tonight able to call themselves a bad mother fucker.
